Spring is upon us, which means it is time to dust off the wintry cobwebs and get ready for the sunshine, colorful flowers, and lush greenery once again.
As the new season blossoms, there are ways to prepare your lawn, garden, and patio to ensure the best outdoor living experience during this refreshing time of year.
Here are some tips to help you get started!
Your Lawn
To start sprucing up your lawn, begin with some cleaning. You will want to clean the leaves, twigs, and other debris that have found their way into your outdoor spaces over the winter.
In the early spring season, be sure to treat your grass properly. This can be done with:
The fertilizer will feed your grass, the pre-emergent will prevent crabgrass from growing, and the weed killer will help keep weeds from growing. When using these products, apply the fertilizer and pre-emergent first, and then six to eight weeks later apply both again with the weed killer. Make sure you’re aware of your local regulations about using products, and go organic when you can! The links above will be helpful, especially in Montgomery County, MD.
Your Garden
When it comes to prepping your garden for the spring, it’s best to follow these three practices:
- Prepare your garden soil, whether you’re working with a container garden, raised beds, or an in-ground garden. Remove any weeds, large rocks, or leftover seasonal annuals from the garden, and then improve the soil by mixing in plenty of organic compost and adding fresh nutrients. This will help your new plants get a great head start for the spring.
- Prune your plants. If you have shrubs or perennials in your garden or integrated into your landscaping, prune them by cutting them back; you can also prune your roses and crepe myrtle early spring to encourage flourishing growth later in the season.
- Use springtime containers. If your garden isn’t ready to start sprouting early spring, you can brighten up your garden and outdoor space with garden containers; head to the store and get some plug plants and put them in multipurpose compost mixed with grit. Set them in planters and place them around your patio, front or back door, or hang them from secure hooks along your garage.
Your Patio
Your patio is a great space for entertaining guests, so let’s get it ready for the spring! First, clean the space by sweeping and then cleaning the area with a long-handled brush and cleaning solution – or a pressure washer if you have one. This will help eliminate any muck, dirt, and stains. If you have patio furniture, this is a good time to brush it off, wipe it down, and clean mildew from the cushions. Apply new stain if needed.
Now, check the space for any weathered-down areas. If things need to be fixed, now is the time to fix them. Replace light bulbs, clean and tidy up your grill, and scope out a couple of fun improvement options for the spring. The good news is that Craftmark works with durable deck materials that are low maintenance, so you can focus your attention on the things that make hanging out there fun!
