Here are a few places you can take the family in this lovely town and adjacent area:
Part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, this center has everything for those interested in aviation. There are historical exhibitions, scientific demonstrations, simulators that will make your stomach twist and turn, an IMAX theater, and daily tours. One of the most exciting aircraft on exhibit is the Space Shuttle Discovery. It’s educational, yet engaging and exciting – the perfect combination for those with children.
Being so close to our nation’s capital means the entire area is chock full of history, but Sully still stands out. Northern Virginia’s first congressional representative, Richard Bland Lee (relative of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee), completed the farm in 1799. It was designated a national historic site in 1959. There are opportunities for tours, field trips, educational classes, and fun-filled camping. Learning doesn’t have to be boring, and the Sully Historic Site proves it!
Known for its pumpkin patches and apple cider in the fall, Ticonderoga Farms also has many summer family activities. Here, kids can enjoy a petting zoo, slide area, pedal cart races, bamboo mazes, hayrides and more. They’ll have a great time while learning a bit about farming and how our food gets to the table.
This sprawling outdoor area features the Walney Visitor Center, a converted farmhouse from 1780. Here, you can camp, bird-watch, walk one of the many trails, or take a history tour. Everyone in the family will love being outside and having a picnic in a picturesque spot. It’s a tranquil place that can be the perfect getaway from our fast-paced modern lives. Have everyone get off their phones for a few hours and spend an enchanting day at the park.
